We are in the midst of all the holiday festivities which means an overabundance of ugly Christmas sweaters, friends trying to convince you that eggnog is actually good, and lots of tears shed as you binge-watch Hallmark Channel Christmas movies.

These traditions warm our hearts, and that’s when we remember that the holiday season is supposed to be all about giving back… right? So we pull up our favorite charity (or at least we have heard of) and give a sizable donation. Now we are the heroes because we not only provided a little money away to people in need but we get a tax write off as well!

So we pull up our favorite charity (or at least the one we have heard of) and give a sizable donation.

We have just reached hero status.

We not only provided a little money to people in need but we also get a tax write off as well.

The thing is, being generous is far greater than just giving money. Being generous should be the life-blood of our very existence. As Christ followers, it is our purpose to bring the light into the darkness giving chance after chance to be a blessing to others.

Every gift comes from God, and it’s meant to be given away.

You may be thinking to yourself, “that’s great Chris I do want to be generous, but I run a business not a charity.”

You’re right. Your business isn’t a charity. However, your business is a gift from God and being generous with your money and resources shouldn’t be an afterthought. It should be embodied in the very model of your business.

Your business isn’t a charity. However, your business is a gift from God and being generous with your profit, time and resources shouldn’t be an afterthought. Generosity should be embodied in the very model of your hustle.

When we create a hustle that incorporates giving into our business model, we’re able to not only sell great products but be a blessing to others in the process. It’s a way to address two essential needs with an action that unifies both your customer and the cause.

Generosity starts with a commitment for us to live with eyes open to our broken world and a readiness to distribute the resources that God has given to us. This is not a rule to be followed but a loud, rebellious statement against our self-seeking world that God can be trusted with anything.

What Does Scripture Say About Giving?

And there is one who withholds more than is right, but it leads to poverty. The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself. - Proverbs 11:24-35

Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:18

Giving money isn’t easy.

Providing resources is not easy.

Giving of our time is not easy.

However, when we make that conscious decision to give we are able to glimpse just a little of how God intended to see the world. It’s a statement of faith trusting that God will always provide us what we need.

Application

Giving from our personal life is one thing but giving from our hustle can be a little trickier. Giving shouldn’t be an afterthought though but a resonating emotion deep within your gut. What are you passionate about? What boils your blood when you hear about injustice? Whatever it is, do that. Give to that. Here are three critical points on how to embed generosity into your hustle.

Whatever it is, do that. Give to that. Here are three critical points on how to embed generosity into your hustle.

1. Listen to the cause

Don’t just give based on your needs. Give based on the needs of the organization. You are giving out of a place of serving.  Listen first. Act secondly.

2. Giving isn’t always money

Everyone needs money. It’s necessary to any organization, but there are plenty of other ways to become involved besides giving of your finances. The more your actively involved with your giving, the more fulfilling it will be for you and your tribe. Everyone has a unique talent. What resources can you give? Are you a graphic designer? Make a free graphic. Work with kids at a pre-school? Have the kids write letters to people the charity serves. Roast your own coffee beans? Make some delicious coffee for all the staff.

3. Give now sooner than later.

The holiday season is a great excuse to give, but it shouldn’t be the only time you give. It’s easier to embed a lifestyle of giving when you do it now rather than later. Don’t wait for the perfect time or when you get a certain amount of money in the bank account. If you find ways to make giving core to your business you won’t have to deliver a lump sum later in the future.

Benediction

Today, may you view the world as God sees it. May you see the needs of your brothers and sisters and may you give. Transforming our world into a little more like heaven.
