Last week was Thanksgiving, and if you’re like any ordinary American, you probably broke out those elastic band sweatpants as you gorged yourself on Turkey, stuffing and green bean casserole…oh and don’t forget the three slices of apple pie you snuck. Hey, I’m not judging I’m just saying it like it is.

I don’t know if it’s the lack of nutrition in our holiday meals or the fact I always overeat, but the day after Thanksgiving I still find myself in this self-loathing lull. Looking in the mirror, I notice that my face has gained 46.3 pounds and I know I have to go exercise to counter the food damage I’ve done. As I take that first step to get my gym shorts out of my dresser, the devil starts whispering to me.

“You know, it’s technically a holiday you should just rest. You’ll jump back on the wagon tomorrow.”

Tomorrow turns into the next day, which then turns into after the weekend, which then turns into next week and pretty soon you can’t remember the last time you stepped foot into a gym. Then the new year comes along, and you sign up for a new gym membership because you need a different atmosphere to get you going, and the cycle rises and repeats. Holiday’s are a great excuse for us to hide behind

The truth is for most entrepreneurs…heck, let’s just say “busy” people… we push exercise to the bottom of our priority list because we have more pressing matters happening. We can view exercise as this waste of time that we feel forced to carve out. We could be working on our next product launch or completing our to-do list.

It’s not greed or keeping up with the Jones’ that motivates us, the hustlers. It’s that we are building something great that is making an impact on the word. That’s what makes it so easy to brush off essential things in our lives. To think that our hustle is more important than our health is one of the most significant mistakes as hustlers we can make.

Exercise must come first, or it won’t happen it all.

What Does Scripture Say About Exercise?

Don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and who was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourselves but to God. 1.Corinthians 6:19

The man answered,” Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” Also, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” 28 Jesus said to him, Your answer is right. Do this, and you will live." Luke 10:27

It’s a pretty straightforward answer to what the Bible says about keeping our body in a healthy state. What I find internet sting though is the story of Jesus in Luke 10.

Jesus is answering questions to a crowd, and someone shouts out “What do I do to live forever?.” Jesus very smartly answers the question with another question “What is written in the law?” That’s when the man answers with a quote from Deuteronomy. Jesus then answers “Your answer is right.”

It’s interesting to me when we read this verse we focus on loving God with all of our heart, soul, and mind but gloss over the strength part. In fact, we look at this verse in another translation, the Message, it reads like this: “He said, “That you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence—and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.”

To love God with all of our muscle.

Exercise is a form of worship to God if we allow it to be.

Application

I think we all understand that exercise is vital to our personal health and our hustle. I can show stats at you all day about how exercise improves our problem-solving abilities, lowers our stress and anxiety levels, and creates a better work-life balance. Instead, I want to focus on is three critical points on how to add exercise to your everyday life.

1. Kill all or nothing mindset.
A lot of us have this mindset that we are going to give 110% to our health routine, and then the first time we break our schedule commit (because IT WILL HAPPEN not IF it will happen), we get discouraged and just give up on trying. The key is to create consistency in your health life. Remember, you are not lazy you’re just starting from zero, and you will have hiccups from time to time.

2. Make it fun.
Make exercise fun. Hate running? DON’T RUN. We get into this mindset that exercise is going to be a montage of sweat and scouting because we hate our lives. Choose an activity that makes you feel good about doing it. Join a basketball league. Join a Crossfit. MAKE IT FUN.

3. Join a community
I’m a huge fan of things like Crossfit and Orangetheory not for the exercise routines, but because of the community, they curate. Don’t get caught up counting calories join a positive up-lifting community or find a workout buddy. That’s what makes the difference when it comes to exercising.
